Will people use Google Chrome over Firefox and IE?
This is a good question! (I can not promise a good answer, but will try anyways.)
First, why did Firefox catch on so quickly?
* Firefox entered the market during a perfect storm.
* IE had a new bug a day and outside of a few patches, they had no interest in improving their product.
* Firefox debuts to a hungry audience of software developers.
* Since Firefox was open source, developers were able to make add-ons and they did in droves.
* Firefox turned the adoption of its product into a political statement against the “evil empire” of Microsoft.
* People who were frustrated with IE’s bugs flocked to it.
* Bloggers added Download Firefox on their sidebars and it was an overnight success. (Which took about 3 years to happen. Find the details here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firefox
* Having Google’s support did not hurt anything either.
Today - Google Chrome
* Google is a serious threat to Firefox and IE for that matter because they are “Google” and have a wide user base. If Google’s million of users like Chrome, its a battle over who will be #2.
* If developers begin creating apps to run on Chrome (give it 6 months before we start seeing a significant number of them), Chrome will be a browser that UI guys will have to deal with.
* As to how much of the market they will capture, I can only speculate - 11% of the browser market would be my guess in 3 years if developers love it and create apps like crazy and Google keeps pushing it from their homepage and of course, people like it.
What would keep Google Chrome from catching on?
* People hate change. Since IE comes with windows, most folks will not look (or even know to look) for alternatives.
* Firefox is the most well-known browser alternative to IE. However, does the general populace know it even exists? For that matter, have they heard of Opera or Flock? Sorry, only us early-adopting Uber-geeks I’d wager.
No matter what happens, I will be watching the developments of this one. Its going to be good.
